About This Reading

Introduction

The Besançon Tarot is a particularly interesting historical variant of the Italian-suited Tarot. Its main distinctive feature concerns two of the Major Arcana.

A notable difference

In the Besançon Tarot, the High Priestess and the Pope are replaced by Juno and Jupiter. This modification clearly distinguishes this design from many Tarot de Marseille decks.

How does the reading work?

Three cards are drawn, either upright or reversed. They represent the current situation, favourable events or obstacles, and finally the guidance card.

Discovering a Tarot variant

The Besançon Tarot offers an opportunity to discover the diversity of historical Tarot designs. Examples and variants are also documented in the collections of the BnF.
